Waterproofing

Waterproofing keeps water on the outside of a structure. It can be a membrane on top, a treatment inside the concrete, or both.

Membranes and treatments

Liquid applied membranes cure into a seamless skin, which helps around penetrations and odd shapes. Sheet membranes come in rolls with lapped seams. Crystalline products react inside concrete pores and are often used below grade.

Details decide the outcome

Most leaks start at edges, drains, joints and pipe penetrations rather than in the open field. A plan for each detail is worth more than an extra coat in the middle of the roof.

Where it is used

  • Flat roofs and podium decks
  • Basements and foundation walls
  • Planters, fountains and water features
  • Tanks and wet rooms

Things to check

  • Ponding water and slope to drains
  • Movement at joints and transitions
  • Protection layers over membranes that will be buried
  • Compatibility with the substrate and any old coating

General information only. Product behavior varies, so confirm details with the manufacturer data sheet and a qualified professional.
