Protective coatings

A protective coating is a thin film that stands between a surface and whatever wants to wear it down: water, chemicals, abrasion, salt or sunlight.

What they are

Protective coatings are liquids that cure into a continuous film. Epoxies, polyurethanes, polyureas and acrylics are the common families. Each one trades off hardness, flexibility, cure speed and how it handles sunlight.

Why surface prep matters most

A coating is only as good as its bond. Most early failures trace back to a surface that was damp, dusty, oily or too smooth. Grinding or blasting, then testing moisture, is usually the biggest part of the job.

Where it is used

  • Concrete decks, ramps and walkways
  • Steel structures, tanks and pipe
  • Secondary containment areas
  • Roofs and parapets

Things to check

  • Moisture coming up through concrete
  • Sunlight on coatings that chalk or yellow outdoors
  • Recoat windows between layers
  • Ventilation and protective gear during application
