Polyurea
Polyurea is a two part coating that cures within seconds of leaving the spray gun, building a tough, flexible membrane in a single visit.
How it works
Two liquids are heated and mixed at the gun under high pressure. They react almost at once, so the coating can be built up thick on vertical surfaces without running. Hybrid products blend in polyurethane chemistry to adjust cost and handling.
Why equipment and training matter
Because it cures so quickly, polyurea needs proper plural component equipment and an applicator who knows how to control temperature, pressure and mix ratio. Ask for references and the product data sheet before work starts.
Where it is used
- Roofs, decks and parking structures
- Secondary containment and tank linings
- Truck beds and trailers
- Bridges, manholes and pipe
Things to check
- Aromatic grades change color in sunlight
- Surface prep and primer on concrete
- Weather and dew point during spraying
- Pure polyurea versus hybrid blends
Common questions
Is polyurea the same as polyurethane?
No. Both come from isocyanate chemistry, but polyurea reacts with amines and cures much faster. Polyurethane reacts with polyols and gives more working time.
Can polyurea go on a home project?
It can, but it is usually sprayed by trained applicators with specialist equipment. Brush or roll products sold as polyurea are often slower curing variants.
