Sealants and joint fillers
Joints are there on purpose so a structure can move. Sealants and fillers close those gaps without stopping the movement.
Sealants versus fillers
Sealants stay soft and stretch as a joint opens and closes, which suits facades, windows and expansion joints. Semi-rigid fillers support the edges of floor joints so forklift wheels do not chip them.
Shape and backing
A sealant works best when it bonds to two sides only. A backer rod or bond breaker tape at the bottom of the joint keeps it from tearing as it stretches.
Where it is used
- Control and expansion joints in slabs
- Facade and window perimeters
- Floor joints under wheeled traffic
- Joints in tanks and containment
Things to check
- Expected joint movement
- Primer needs on porous or damp edges
- Paintability if the joint will be coated
- Chemical exposure in industrial areas
